Decorating the church (or another appropriate venue)

Consider what physical symbols are appropriate. A central motif of our faith is the cross, should the cross be accompanied by elements identifiable with the crisis (a D Notice, disinfectant?).

The image of a dead lamb is, of course, both rich in Christian symbolism and a sombre reflection on the crisis.

How would the floral display reflect the theme of the reflection rather than that of a celebratory Harvest Festival.

Use of additional Material within the church

Are there images, photographs, statistics etc. relating to the parish that would be appropriate.

How many farmers are there in the parish, and what numbers were affected, can they be mapped and a display made?

What other industries suffered and how would their needs be represented?

Are there examples of the prayer cards/letters that were circulated to be put on display? & Many of the quotes from the Marches Chronicles / Western Daily Press etc. will be relevant to the issues.

Choice of preacher / speakers

Consider choosing someone from the Industry or related work who was affected by the crisis a farmer, vet, MAFF official etc., either to preach or to offer a short personal comment. A series of short comments throughout the service might be helpful rather than a single sermon.

Consider a rural-urban swap. One rural parish is inviting a preacher from outer London to preach and to reflect on the urban perception of what was happening, the following week the roles will be reversed.

The next steps

The service might end with a blessing for the land (Rogation Sunday material would be appropriate), as a sign that a new beginning is appropriate and that we need to move forward. People should be challenged with the need to take action. Farming practices and structures are the result of market economics, and those in turn are a reflection of what society as a whole demands. Less than 10% of consumers bother to read the label before they buy, and most buy only on price. Practical issues are important - supporting local produce, local markets, treating food with respect (rather than taking it for granted), bothering to ask at supermarkets where the food is sourced etc. would all make an impact.
